SUMMARY:María José Arjona. Thunder
DESCRIPTION:Thunder is a performative\, sculptural and sound event that addresses cracks as forms produced by the interaction of bodies\, forces and materials. Rather than understanding the crack as evidence of rupture\, in this work it is posited as a third space\, an aperture that might allow us to view an interiority that had previously remained contained. \nTwo bodies\, which carry two black boxes\,They are in space.Through a sequence of movements\, the vibration produced by the contact between the boxes modifies their surfaces\, ultimately generating several fissures. The boxes function as resistant surfaces and as resonant spaces that acoustically amplify the encounter between the bodies. Like thunder and lightning—sound and light manifestations of the same discharge—sound and light appear as expressions of a relationship of forces. \nThe crack transforms the condition of the box without causing it to collapse completely. At the end of the action\, the modified boxes retain the material inscription of the impacts and reveal\, through the crack\, what had previously been contained. \nThunder is a proposal by María José Arjona\, accompanied by Camilo Acosta\, as part of the third edition of the series The Chairs of Tàpies: Invoking the Gap. \n  \nMaría José Arjona is a Colombian performance artist who explores the body as a space of knowledge\, transmission and transformation. She develops her nomadic practice through extended encounters in different territories and ecosystems\, where travel\, observation and body research give rise to relationships between forms of human and supra-human lives. Rivers\, rocks\, plants\, animals\, sounds and atmospheric phenomena become active agents of her work. Her engagement of archives preserves traces of what has occurred\, with the possibility of new encounters and transformations remaining open. \nFor more than thirty years\, she has presented her work in art institutions and international events\, including MACBA\, the Louvre\, New York’s MoMA\, Art Basel Miami Beach and various international biennales and triennials. In 2010 she participated as a re-performer in the Marina Abramović retrospective The Artist Is Present\, at MoMA. Her work is in public and private collections\, including Castello di Rivoli\, the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation\, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and Bogotá’s Museo de Arte Moderno. \nResearch\, pedagogical and collective processes are also foundational for her practice. Over the past fifteen years\, she has initiated workshops\, seminars and collaborative research projects with learning institutions such as Princeton University\, New York University\, the DAAD program and the University of Antioquia. She has also been the artistic director of the project Amazonas in FLORA ars+natura\, in Bogotá. \n  \nCamilo Acosta is a Colombian video artist\, performer and art manager\, recently settled in Barcelona. His practice explores the body\, action and time through experimental video\, live video (VJ sets) and long-duration performances. His work has been presented international in venues like MACBA\, MAMM in Medellín\,  W139 gallery in Amsterdam and Museo del Chopo in Mexico City\, and is part of the permanent collection of MAMBO\, in Bogotá. \nAcosta is cofounder of the collective LOS AMARILLOS\, focused on the issue of HIV\, and HOUSE OF TUPAMARAS\, a referential group in the Colombian queer scene since 2016. He is further part of Street Jizz and Instituto Brutal Visual\, and has collaborated with artists like María José Arjona and Carlos Motta. \n  \nSeries “The Chairs of Tàpies” are curated by Judith Barnés.

SUMMARY:Beyond looking. The Sala de Reflexió: a shared experience.
DESCRIPTION:We live surrounded by images\, noise and bustle. What happens if we stop for a while? \nWe invite you to take a break and discover the Sala de Reflexió (Reflection Room)\, while experiencing the works of Antoni Tàpies installed there. \nBefore entering\, we will participate in a very special ritual. An experience based on shared trust\, it will invite us to look at art – and even the whole world – in a very different way. Once inside the Room\, we will draw upon the relationship between the space and the artist’s works to forge new connections\, exploring the possibilities offered by our own actions and gestures.

SUMMARY:Extramural 2026. Second time/resurrection
DESCRIPTION:To close the art project Extramural: Timelines / resurrection\, and in partnership with the Filmoteca de Catalunya and the Loop Festival\, the Museu Tàpies is organising a season of screenings featuring three films by Dora García that share a single question: what does it mean to come back? Coming back to reading something\, talking about something\, bringing back bodies\, idea and voices that history has tended to erase. Rather than seeing resurrection as a supernatural event\, the season approaches it as a political and poetic practice: a gesture to reactivate memory that makes possible new forms of transmission\, resistance and community. \nThe screenings of The Joycean Society (2013)\, Segunda Vez (2018) and (Revolución\, cumple tu promesa) Amor rojo (2024) revisit different times and geographies in order to explore the persistence of ideas despite their apparent defeat. In all three films\, reading\, conversation\, performance and film become devices able to bring out what seemed lost and keep alive things that continue to address the present. \nThe Second Time / resurrection series brings to cinema the issues that have run throughout the art project Extramural: Timelines / resurrection: how ideas outlast absences\, how pictures can reactivate memory and what forms of life continue to emerge even after their disappearance. Instead of bringing it to an end\, these three screenings propose a new opening up: each viewing is a second time\, a new reading\, a possible resurrection. \n  \nPROGRAMME \n10 November \nThe Joycean Society is a film that follows a reading group at the James Joyce Foundation in Zurich\, which has been meeting since 1986 to read Finnegans Wake together. This film turns shared reading into an exercise of perseverance\, interpretation and construction of meaning\, revealing the reading community as a form of cultural resistance. \nThe screening will be followed by a conversation between Dora García and writer and translator Miriam Cano. \n  \n17 November \nSegunda Vez takes the figure of Argentinian psychoanalyst and theorist Oscar Masotta as its starting point to revisit the relations between concept art\, psychoanalysis and political violence during the Argentinian dictatorship. Somewhere between a document\, a fiction and a historical recreation\, the film reflects upon the forced disappearances and the possibility of restoring\, through art\, what power has tried to erase. \nThe session will end with a conversation between Dora García and researcher Cloe Masotta. \n  \n20 November \n(Revolución\, cumple tu promesa) Amor rojo takes up the legacy of thinker and revolutionary Alexandra Kollontai to ask what remains today of the emancipatory promise of the 20th century. Connecting the revolutionary experiments of Russia and Mexico with contemporary Latin American trans-feminisms\, the film imagines revolution not as a closed event\, but as promise that remains open. \nThe screening will be accompanied by a conversation between Dora García and writer and journalist Andrea Valdés. \n  \nFilm series with the collaboration of the Filmoteca de Catalunya\, as part of the Loop Festival \nA proposal of the project Extramural 2026\, by Dora García\, Timelines / resurrection. \nCoordination: Judith Barnés\, head of public programme at the Museu Tàpies \n  \n[Image: Still from Segunda Vez\, digital film by Dora García\, 2018]

SUMMARY:Antoni Tàpies Study Days. Natural History Series\, 1950 and 1951
DESCRIPTION:The Secret Life of Forms: Readings on Natural History Series \nThe study days The Secret Life of Forms: Readings on “Natural History” offers insight into the series Antoni Tàpies produced between 1950 and 1951\, a collection of 30 drawings on paper that are essential to understanding the artist’s explorations during the early years of his career. \nMade while he was living in Paris and linked to the artistic\, philosophical and political concerns of the post-war period\, Natural History presents a universe of forms oscillating between the organic and the architectural realms\, and between the body\, nature and social structures. Combining a repertoire of recurring forms and symbols with an exploration of marks\, traces and textures\, the drawings display an understanding of nature that is dynamic\, transformative and rich in meaning\, rather than contemplative. \nThe conference invites participants to consider this series from various angles and examine the forms\, materials and imaginaries that comprise it. Presentations will address issues relating to the construction of the body of work\, the material biographies of the drawings\, drawing as a living organism\, hybrid forms and the limits of classification\, as well as the relationships between nature\, culture\, politics and knowledge\, among other topics. \nThe programme will take place over two sessions\, featuring lectures\, readings and open Q&A sessions. \n  \nProgramme \n9 December 2026 \n6 pm · Presentation of the study days by the Museu Tàpies \n6.10 pm · Lecture by Isabel Valverde \n6.50 pm · Lecture by Aldo Urbano \n7.30 pm · Reading by Pol Guasch \n8 pm · Open Q&A session \n8.30 pm · Close \n  \n10 December 2026 \n6 pm · Presentation of the programme by the Museu Tàpies \n6.10 pm · Lecture by Marcos Augusto \n6.50 pm · Lecture by Daniel López del Rincón \n7.30 pm · Reading by Núria Martínez Vernis \n8 pm · Open Q&A session \n8.30 pm · Close \n  \nThe study days will continue next year with a second encounter devoted to exploring in greater depth the issues raised during this first edition. The participants’ contributions will subsequently be compiled in a publication\, planned for release in 2028 as part of the Museu Tàpies’s book series. \nThe complete programme will be published soon. \n  \nCoinciding with these conferences\, the Museu Tàpies will publish the first volume of the new collection Contemporary Views on Tàpies\, arising from international symposia and study conferences\, such as those held in 2024 and 2025 on the Teresa Series (1966) and the Letters to Teresa series (1971–1974). This volume will include texts from the papers presented by Maria Josep Balsach\, José Manuel Cuesta Abad\, Anna Gual\, Rasha Omran\, Valentín Roma\, Gabriel Ventura\, Pedro G. Romero\, Andrea Soto Calderón\, Blanca Llum Vidal\, Raül Garrigasait and Eloy Fernández Porta. \nIn a year\, then\, the Museu Tàpies will have completed its new editorial line which\, together with the aforementioned collection\, includes the reissue of Antoni Tàpies’ essays and essays on the artist by the winners of the International Essay Prize “Yesterday’s Action\, Today’s Thought”\, promoted within the framework of the collaboration between the Museu Tàpies and the Antoni Tàpies Chair – UPF in Contemporary Art and Thought\, and other intellectuals invited to participate. \n  \n[Image: Antoni Tàpies.
