A talk by Mathieu Mercier

In this new activity in the Studio inframince programme, Mathieu Mercier will give a talk on the Boîte-en-valise, a kind of portable miniature catalogue of Duchamp’s work. The artist made an edition of about twenty such boxes between 1935 and 1941 and, later, between 1950 and 1960, he produced a new edition of six different series. In 2015, Mercier reissued a facsimile edition of the Boîte-en-valise with the intention of making the ‘museum within a box’ accessible to all. This miniature museum contains sixty-nine reproductions, including some three-dimensional models of Duchamp’s best-known creations, such asFountain, Nu descendant un escalier and Le Grand Verre.

Mathieu Mercier (1970) lives and works between Paris and Valencia. His work, which spans the fields of architecture, design and the visual arts, is an investigation on the place that the everyday object occupies in the worlds of both industry and art.

Activity in collaboration with the French Institute, Barcelona, within the framework of Studio inframince, a programme of activities curated by Erich Weiss around the exhibition Saâdane Afif. The Fountain Archives and beyond.
