Imma Prieto, new Director of Fundació Antoni Tàpies
The Board of Trustees of the Fundació Antoni Tàpies has appointed Imma Prieto as the institution’s new Director for the next five years. It was the Board’s unanimous decision following the international open call of September 2022.
The committee of experts responsible for the decision was formed by María Dolores Jiménez Blanco, together with the Board members Ferran Rodés, Manuel Borja-Villel, Toni Tàpies, Àlex Nogueras, Marta Clari and Sònia Hernández Almodóvar.
Imma Prieto (Vilafranca del Penedès, 1976) is a curator, researcher and writer. For the last four years, she has been Director of Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art in Palma, during which time she has organised more than thirty group and solo exhibitions, a play with the North-American creator Robert Wilson, the international CIMAM 2022 congress and the training courses Art and Thought LAP (Contact Zone: Repairing Crises). Besides other activities generated from the museum, she has helped create new communities and establish links with the local public, while consolidating national and international recognition for the institution.
Throughout her career as a curator, she has worked both nationally and internationally with artists such as Jimmie Durham, Martha Rosler, Maria Lai, Anri Sala, Ana Vieira, Yto Barrada, Banu Cennetoglu, Hiwa K, Teresa Margolles, Esther Ferrer, Dan Perjovski, Jorge Eduardo Eielson, Daniel García Andújar, Antoni Muntadas, the Mal Pelo collective, Rogelio López Cuenca, Elo Vega, Elena del Rivero, María Ruído, Fina Miralles, Antoni Llena, Miguel Ángel Campano and Estefanía Peñafiel, among many others. As a lecturer, for over eleven years she taught at different Catalan universities, specialising in the Theory and Aesthetics of Contemporary Art and New Media, and Image Theory and Curating with Audiovisual Media, while collaborating with different universities on masters and postgraduate courses, and giving lectures in various national and international institutions.
She has contributed to various catalogues, research books and specialised media. She was manager of the European research group ELAA (European Live Art Archive, 2008–12), formed by the University of Oxford, the University of Girona and the GlogauAir Artists in Residence / Berlin. She has also collaborated with other international research groups such as Émergence de l’art vidéo en Europe (1960–1980), formed by the Université Paris 8. In 2017, she made her first documentary Eco de Primera Mort and in 2018 she was awarded the GAC International Art Critic Award.
She has been a member of several juries, including: Velázquez Award (Spain, 2021), Parliament of the Balearic Islands (Spain, 2020), Bienal Internacional de Cuenca (Ecuador, 2018), among others.
In their assessment, the committee of experts took into account, apart from Imma Prieto’s academic training and solid professional career, the richness of her profile in the international arena as well as her wide knowledge of Antoni Tàpies’ work. At the same time, the committee highlighted the thoughtful, ambitious and innovative project presented by Imma Prieto for the future of the Fundació. Her appointment comes at a very important time for the institution, which in December inaugurates the year commemorating the centenary of the birth of Antoni Tàpies.
By becoming Director of the Fundació, Imma Prieto will take on a role that had been vacant since the previous director, Carles Guerra, left in January 2020. During this period, the management team of the institution has assumed this task.
