The Museu Tàpies presents the exhibition Antoni Tàpies: The Imagination of the World. Curated by Imma Prieto and Pablo Allepuz—director and curator of the Museu Tàpies Collection, respectively—the exhibition invites visitors to take part in a play of gazes and reflections inspired by the images as a starting point, with the aim of intertwining meanings and emphasising senses. The idea is to connect, in a free and open way, the imaginary and visual context that the artist evokes through his work with some of the images and personal objects he lived with, collected and interacted with, as well as with archival and bibliographic documents, produced during his early creative years, which include elements from popular culture.
The project is a curatorial essay that raises iconographic and historiographic questions, through the exhibition of around 50 works by the artist alongside more than a hundred objects and documents of various kinds. The materials on display will also be reviewed and updated throughout the year in order to delve deeper into knowledge, research and the possibilities of initiating new interdisciplinary and intercultural conversations between the collection, the institution’s archive, objects and materials from different sources (private collections, archives, libraries, markets, etc.).
Antoni Tàpies: The Imagination of the World, which takes its title from the artist’s text of the same name included in the book L’art i els seus llocs (Art and Its Places, 1999), will expand its contents beyond the exhibition through a wide-ranging public and educational programme that includes visits for all audiences, an international seminar and study days, as well as a particular focus on explicit interventions by other artists, in order to broaden its meanings through other languages and perspectives.
