Rodolphe Stadler closed his gallery in Paris in 1985. While making an inventory, he discovered a painting by Tàpies remaining in the warehouse. Belonging to the artist, it was damaged and had never been returned to him. This was Gris uniforme. N. LVI (Uniform Grey. No. LVI), 1957. Seeing it was not fit to be sold, Stadler proposed returning it to Tàpies on condition that he provide another
in exchange. Tàpies suggested it be restored and donated in Stadler’s name to the Collection of the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, which had just been created. During the restoration in 1990, the artist decided not to conceal the loss of materials, allowing us to appreciate the different layers in the work, while he added a black graphic mark and numbers, inverted as if reflected in a mirror.
