Antoni Tàpies considered the painting as an object, not as a window, as was the norm in the classical conception of painting. For this reason, Tàpies gave relief to the surface of his canvases with materials such as earth, sand, straw, etc. In this type of work, sometimes the artist intervened on the back of the canvas to emphasise his conception of the painting as an object. Pintura-bastidor (Stretcher-Painting, 1962) exemplifies this idea, and Pantalons sobre bastidor (Trousers on a Stretcher, 1971) as well.
